Dancing With the Stars: Will Rob Win the Trophy?
Rob Kardashian Here's what happened to the Dancing With the Stars finalists on Monday night: Ricki Lake did her best not to screw up the lifts in her freestyle dance - "I was really afraid of falling down," she said. J.R. Martinez put on a good face after screwing up his cha cha when his injured ankle started to give out. "I did panic," he said, "because I rolled my ankle in my shoe and I went into a step too quickly." And Rob Kardashian somehow snuck by the two long-time frontrunners and got a perfect score on his freestyle, cruising into first place. "We've already put in all the work, so it's just about having fun," he said. "I try to look at the whole competition as having fun. I've done that since day one, and it's got me this far."Season 10's runner-up, figure skater Evan Lysacek, said for him the finale was all about Kardashian: "I've been following the show all season, but I really came tonight to see him. His improvement has been just amazing."Chaz Bono voiced similar sentiments. "I remember Rob, the first dance, and us backstage rehearsing, and showing each other our dances," said Bono. "And Rob wouldn't smile, he'd look at the floor. It's like he's a different person."Does Bono think Kardashian could take the whole thing? "Yes," he says. "He's come so far. J.R. was the first person I met, and when Lacy [Schwimmer] and I saw one of his first rehearsals, we both said, 'finals.' And then Ricki, too, you saw pretty quickly that she was really good and had a great partner in Derek [Hough]. So for a long time, we all knew it would be Ricki and J.R. But that third spot, who was going to take it? And Rob took it. It wasn't given to him."Cinderella, a.k.a. Rob Kardashian, has arrived at the ball. .post-content img {display:none;} Back in October, director James Cameron joked that the re-release of 'Titanic' in 3D scheduled for next April was all about the bottom-line: "We didn't make enough money the first time around," he said during an early media showcase of nine scenes from the 'Titanic' conversion. Try as he might, however, Cameron can't hide his genuine love for the film and for the audiences who have embraced 'Titanic' since 1997. "'Titanic' is my baby," the director, who won an Oscar for 'Titanic,' says in an exclusive new featurette about the film that you can watch above. "[It] always has something for you, no matter what your age." For more on why Cameron felt this was the perfect time to re-release 'Titanic,' and why this new version is about so much more than just 3D, watch the extended clip above. TV Academy Elects Bruce Rosenblum as Chairman and CEO
For the first time in 14 years, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has elected a top industry executive as its chairman and CEO. Bruce Rosenblum takes on the high-profile but unpaid position in addition to his job as president of the Warner Bros. Television Group and member of the Office of the President of Warner Bros.our editor recommendsWhy It's Called an Emmy9 Emmy Myths DebunkedAcademy of Television Arts & Sciences Elects 2011 OfficersTV Academy Hall of Fame Honors Diahann Caroll, Peter Jennings He is the first high-level TV executive to lead the organization best known for giving out the Primetime Emmy Awards since Rich Frank ended his terms in office in 1997. At that time, Frank was also president of Walt Disney's television operations. PHOTOS: The Best and Worst Moments From the 2011 Emmy Awards Rosenblum replaces John Shaffner, who was termed out after two terms and not eligible to run for re-election. Shaffner is a production designer who has done most of his work at Warner Bros., on such shows as Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. The idea that one of TV's top executives would lead the academy was an issue in the election, in which Rosenblum faced a heated contest with Nancy Bradley Wiard, a freelance TV producer and consultant. She has done projects for TV One and previously was a producer on the TV soap opera The Young & the Restless, from 1973-2003. The issue was whether Rosenblum, who was recruited by some ATAS board members to reinvigorate the nonprofit group's leadership, should be chosen over Wiard, who had worked her way up through the organization, serving on numerous committees. She most recently has been the ATAS vice chair and co-chairs the academy's anomalies committee and is a member of the activities and by-laws committees. She also was part of the group that earlier this year negotiated a new eight-year contract for the four major broadcast networks to continue carrying the Emmy Awards. PHOTOS: Best and Worst Emmy Moments It is what is unspoken in that new contract with ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox that makes this election especially important. Over the next seven years, there will be opportunities to make changes in the show, such as dropping certain categories to speed things up and make room for more pure entertainment. Wiard was known to have been instrumental in the decision by ATAS to fold together the TV movie and miniseries category. Some board members believe Rosenblum, who is on the same level as the top network executives, will be better able to make the right deal. Others think that he is too close to the network heads and that he might be susceptible to going along with their wishes. There is also concern that some ATAS board members may not want to confront Rosenblum because they will fear he might then not hire them to work at Warner Bros., which is the top supplier to the major TV and cable networks and has been for 18 of the past 20 years. PHOTOS: Executives Hit the Emmy Red Carpet Within ATAS, everyone is a peer. That means a production designer or writer or publicist or director is the equal of a top executive like Rosenblum, at least in theory. The election of new officers is not a vote by all 6,000 ATAS members. Rather the election is by representatives of each of the peer groups within the academy and the executive committee. That means about 80 people vote after each candidate is allowed to make a brief statement about their intentions. Rosenblum has said that he is taking on this time consuming task because he wants to help guide an important industry organization at a time of great change in the business of television. He is known as a man of great integrity and has an excellent business reputation. PHOTOS: Emmys Red Carpet Fashion Rosenblum has also said in recent weeks that his agenda would be to expand the diversity of the ATAS membership, promote anti-piracy efforts, encourage local production and help create employment opportunities for everyone in the industry. Rosenblum, who is 53 years old, has headed the Warner TV group since 2005 and before that was executive vp for six years. He played a central role in the deal that created the CW, a joint venture of Warner and CBS. Rosenblum joined Warner in 1989 when it acquired Lorimar Telepictures, where he was vp business affairs. He began his career in entertainment law in 1982. He is a graduate of USC and has his law degree from UCLA. Related Topics Academy of Television Arts & Sciences 1 2 next last

King Curling (Kong Curling)
A Euforia Film release of a 4 1/2 Film presentation. (International sales: NonStop Sales, Stockholm.) Produced by Hakon Overas. Executive producer, Lars Andreas Hellebust. Directed by Ole Endresen. Screenplay, Endresen, Atle Antonsen. With: Atle Antonsen, Linn Skaber, Ane Dahl Torp, Kare Conradi, Jon Oigarden, Steinar Sagen, Jan Saelid, Anne Marit Jacobsen, Ingar Helge Gimle, Magnus Devold, Else Kass Furuseth, Harald Eia, Bard Tufte Johansen. (Norwegian, English dialogue)Doing for the ice-rink-based sport of curling what "Kingpin" did for bowling or "Dodgeball" did for ... er, dodgeball, raucous Norwegian laffer "King Curling" reps a hilarious take on the mock-heroic sporting-underdog genre. Pic throws a spotlight mostly on massive local comedy star Atle Antonsen, who co-wrote and stars as a champ who must overcome odds to win a crucial match, but co-writer-helmer Ole Endresen ensures the rest of his skilled cast all get a chance to score laughs. Made with pro polish, pic is funny enough, even in translation, to travel beyond Norway, where it's put up high B.O. numbers. Early action is set about 10 years ago, though the mix of 1970s and '80s fashions and soundtrack choices confuse the issue somewhat. Oslo native Truls Paulsen (Antonsen) is the obsessively competitive captain of Norway's top curling team, a sport that (for those who may not be of Scottish, Canadian or Scandinavian extraction) looks like a cross between bowling and darts. Truls' team includes ladies' man Marcus (Jon Oigarden), grumpy Espen (Jan Saelid) and workhorse Flemming (Steinar Sagen), along with Truls' lifelong mentor, Gordon (Ingar Helge Gimle), as the team coach, and Truls' wife, Sigrid (Linn Skaber), as the team's one-woman entourage. Unfortunately, due to obsessive-compulsive tendencies, Truls totally loses it during a match against afro-sporting archrival Stefan Ravndal (Kare Conradi) and his team, and ends up spending a decade in a mental hospital drugged up to his eyeballs. When he's finally released into Sigrid's care, he struggles to reintegrate into society, especially since he's under strict orders not to even think about curling again. But when he hears that Gordon is dying in a hospital and only an expensive lung transplant will save him, Truls decides to reform the team for one last, lucrative match. Screenplay utterly conforms to the traditional loser-to-winner story template, but as with a sonnet or a three-minute pop song, structural originality is never the point; it's all in the details, the running gags and the timing. Pic deftly weaves in subplots and other elements -- Espen's frustrations with a noisy milkman, a support group composed of loonies, some misadventures with bird-watchers -- that evoke Antonsen and Endresen's roots in TV sketch comedy, as do the elegantly staged bouts of slapstick, such as a one-take tracking shot of Truls wreaking havoc in a hospital corridor. Otherwise, the humor relies mainly on bathetic campiness, the characters intoning sentiments with tremendously earnest gravitas about the intrinsically silly-looking sport they worship. Consequently, few of the lines are funny on paper; it's the way the thesps deliver them with such intensely straight faces that puts the material across. The ensemble is uniformly excellent; Antonsen, strapping but perfectly ordinary in appearance, is a standout, along with Skaber, both perky and menacing as his frustrated, slightly demented spouse. Production design and costumes deploy the palette of hot pastels and lurid colors needed to evoke the right degree of Nordic kitsch. Lensing by Askild Vik Edvardsen utilizes widescreen framing to full comic effect, while editing by Per Erik Eriksen keeps things ticking beautifully.Camera (color, widescreen), Askild Vik Edvardsen; editor, Per Erik Eriksen; music, Stein Johan Grieg Halvorsen, Eyvind Andreas Skeie; music supervisors, Henrik Hawor, Johan Husvik; production designer, Merete Bostrom; costume designer, Camilla Lindblom; sound (Dolby Digital), Kenneth Gustavsen; sound designer, Baard Haugan Ingebretsen; supervising sound editor, Baard H. Secretary of State weighs in anti-piracy legislation
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, responding to predictions that anti-piracy legislation would give foreign regimes reason to censor the web, said that there "is no contradiction between intellectual property rights protection and enforcement and ensuring freedom of expression on the Internet." She made the remarks in a letter to Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), a chief supporter of a House bill aimed at rooting out so-called "rogue websites," including those overseas, that traffic in pirated movies, TV shows, music and an array of other goods. Berman had asked her to respond to assertions made by opponents of the legislation, who say that it would send the wrong message to foreign governments because it relies on domain name filtering, underming U.S. support for online freedom of expression. The Center for Democracy and Technology opposes the legislation as written, and says the "international example it sets would encourage balkanization of the global Internet." Clinton gave a Jan. 21, 2010, speech on Internet freedom, but Berman said her words had been "mischaracterized" by opponents of the anti-piracy legislation pending in the House and the Senate. "The Arab Spring shows the promise of the Internet as a medium by which peaceful demonstrators can mobilize citizens in the face of government oppression," Clinton wrote in her Oct. 25 letter. "The Internet also offers tremendous opportunity for creators and inventors, but that promise will not be met unless the rules of copyright and trademark are protected and enforced." She did not directly cite the legislation -- the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect IP Act in the Senate -- but wrote that "there will be many opportunities in the future for the State Department to reiterate publicly that Internet freedom and intellectual property protection are mutually consistent." Meanwhile, Politico reported on Friday that Google is considering dropping its membership in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has been aggressively lobbying for passage of the anti-piracy bills. Google execs have opposed the legislation, warning of its consequences on free speech as well as the obligation that it will impose on Internet companies to block sites. Another opponent of the legislation, Yahoo!, last month declined to renew its membership. Member companies of the Consumer Electronics Assn. also are pressing that organization to reconsider its membership in the Chamber, Politico said. A spokeswoman for Google could not immediately be reached. A spokesman for CEA also had no comment, but said, "we have worked well with the Chamber on many issues, most recently successful passage of important free trade agreements" but added that they do "believe that the Chamber's support of this IP legislation, and particularly the trial lawyer-friendly private right of action therein, does not comport with our members' interests."
